Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
